Please note: Braereth and its dialects distinguish between second person singular and plural; that is, there is a difference between “you” when referring to one person (tu) and “you” when referring to more than one person (vous). In the Tenibvreth dialect, vous is also used when addressing one person as a sign of respect or formality, but this is rare in the other dialects. In the examples below, you will find many words in pairs like tu/vous: In these cases, the singular will always be the first option, and the plural will be the second.
Greetings & Salutations
Hello, How are you?
- Salute — Hello! Hi! An informal greeting.
- Sauve —Hello! Hi! Cheers! An informal greeting or toast.
- Bona nuictje — Hello. Good day. Literally: “Good night.” Regularly abbreviated as Bo’nuictje.
- Quomu estaes/estate? — How are you?
- Quomu fluictuith? — How are you? How’s it going? Only used by the Merineth. Literally: “How is it floating?”
- Quomu fluith? — How are you? How’s it going? Only used by the Tenibvreth. Literally: “How is it flowing?” (referring to blood).
- Quomu vaes/ite? — How are you? Literally: “How are you going?”
- Vaou bene. — I’m well. Literally: “I am going well.”
- Quomu nataes/natate? — How are you? How’s it going? Only used by the Merineth. Literally: “How dow you swim?”
- Natau bene. — I’m well. Literally: “I am swimming well.”
- Quomu te/ve vae? — How are you? How’s it going? Literally: “How is it going to/for you?”
- Me vae bene. — I’m well. Literally: “It is going well to/for me.”
