Etymology
From Middle Valthungian daritjinWho the heck knows? Spices are weird. Compare Persian دارچینی (dâr-e-čini, dârčini) and Old Armenian դարիճենիկ (daričenik), both from Middle Iranian *{dār-i-čēnīk} ‘Chinese tree’, Aramaic דַּרְצִינִי (darṣīnī), and Classical Syriac ܕܪܨܝܢܝ (dārṣīnī), ܨܝܢܕܪܓ (ṣīndreḡ). It is a mystery how the word travelled from Persian to Valthungian, and equally mysterious why the Valthungian form did not retain the long vowel in {dār-}, or indeed why it vanished altogether. .
