Etymology

Root √cam.

Affix (Suffix, nominal)

-camu

  1. in-law, spouse of
When expressed as a suffix, the modified familial term that precedes it must first be adjectivised (final -u changed to -a, e.g. vatra-camu ‘step-parent’) and followed by a hyphen; otherwise, the familial term must follow camu as an adjective, e.g. camu vatrina ‘mother’s spouse’. In the case of parents and grandparents, a better translation would be ‘step-’, e.g. vatrotca-caminu translates to ‘father’s wife’, i.e. ‘step-mother’ rather than ‘mother-in-law’.
