From Middle Valthungian sjangzjevʀ. Further etymology uncertain; likely from or related to Persian شنگویر (šangevir), from Sanskrit शृङ्गवेर (śṛṅgavera), borrowed from Old Tamil iṅci ‘ginger’ + vēr ‘root’.
