Valthungian

Pronunciation

Etymology

From Middle Valthungian patnobran ― a compound of patno ‘pan’, from Old Valthungian *patnou, from Griutungi *pannō, from Proto-Germanic *pannǭ ― and bran ‘child’, though the latter element is likely a homophone derived from the verb bretnjen ‘to burn’, from Old Valthungian *breatnjan, from Griutungi *brannjan (cf. Gothic *𐌱𐍂𐌰𐌽𐌽𐌾𐌰𐌽 (brannjan)), from Proto-Germanic brannijaną.

Noun

patnabran

  1. pancake.
  2. patnabran.
A type of baked Valthungian pancake, somewhat akin to a Dutch baby or clafoutis.
Literally: “Pan Kid,” though it is likely that the bran element actually refers to the verb bretnin ‘to burn’ rather than the noun bran ‘child’.
A classic patnabran recipe, below.
