Valthungian

Pronunciation

Etymology

From Middle Valthungian fiðri, þluðri, þljugri, from Old Valthungian fidyri, from Griutungi *fiþri, from Proto-Germanic *feþriją.

Perhaps a conflation or degradation of þljugna ‘to fly’ (from *fleuganą) and fiðre (*feþrō), a neuter ija-stem variant of fiðra (*feþriją) ‘feather’. The word for ‘wing’ derived solely from *feþriją through Old Valthungian times (Griutungi *fiþri, OV fidyri) and the conflation with þljugna can first be observed in Middle Valthungian, where perhaps the distinction between fiðra and fiðri was becoming a little too narrow. Middle Valthungian shows fiðri, þljugafiðri, þljuðri, and even þjugri. The þljuðri form made its way into the modern language as þljuðre.
